Wolman-Minskey American Legion Auxiliary – Unit 317 sponsored the Americanism Essay Contest at the 7th grade level at Parkside Middle School, Wautoma. This year’s topic was “What does FREEDOM mean to you?” Seven students submitted entries into the contest for judging. Unit 317 chose a first, second, and third place winner. These students were given monetary awards. All seven students received a certificate and letter of participation. The first place winner is Leana Biesek from Wautoma, and she was awarded a monetary prize of $25. Leana’s essay met all the requirements of the rubric and rules. Her essay was sent to the American Legion Auxiliary Department of Wisconsin to be judged along with the rest of the first-place winner from the State of Wisconsin in the 7th-grade category. The second place winner is Keana Berger from Wautoma who was awarded a monetary prize of $15; the third place winner is Violet Gardner from Wautoma who was awarded $10. The remaining four essays were submitted by Chayton Mott and Miranda Schmidt from Wautoma, and Priscilla Gonzales and Anthony Gregesich from Redgranite. Each of these students received a certificate of participation. The Auxiliary is very proud of all seven students. The Auxiliary is very grateful to Breanna Yeska, the 7th-grade Language Arts Teacher, for once again agreeing to present the contest to the students as she has done for many years. This essay contest was a fantastic way for the students to ponder and express their thoughts on “Freedom” and its many forms of meaning. This is an excellent lesson for them to learn about being Patriotic to the United State of America. The Auxiliary appreciates Breanna so much for contributing to the success of this project each year.
