Local leader Bob Jozwowksi, a Mt. Morris resident, received a 2023 Wisconsin Stream Monitoring “Outstanding Coordinator” Award at the Wisconsin Lakes and Rivers Convention in Stevens Point on April 11. He was recognized for his “remarkable leadership” with the Central Wisconsin Trout Unlimited River Keepers, coordinating and expanding volunteer stream monitoring across many counties and watersheds in central Wisconsin over the last eight years.
The Wisconsin Stream Monitoring Awards are presented annually by UW-Madison Extension and the Wisconsin DNR to recognize individuals and groups for their exemplary efforts in support of volunteer stream monitoring, stream and river stewardship, and for their commitment to developing partnerships and sharing their skills and water quality data to benefit Wisconsin streams and rivers.
Bob has supported over 100 stream monitoring volunteers and 30 monitoring teams annually across 5 counties, and volunteers his time to provide ongoing communication, training sessions, fall “wrap-up” meetings, and guidance for the volunteers who participate in the statewide Water Action Volunteers (WAV) stream monitoring program.
Frank and Lynn Druecke, longtime local WAV volunteers, described Bob’s dedication to his volunteer teams as “truly exemplary”. He works year-round planning and fostering valuable partnerships, including reviewing local monitoring plans with the local Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) stream biologist.
Bob and his wife Deb Jozwowski, who monitors streams as well, remarked that in their travels, they’ve noticed there is no other place with rivers and streams so crystal clear as in Waushara County. “We are so lucky and we need to do everything possible to protect our water.”
The Water Action Volunteers (WAV) program at UW-Madison Extension supports more than 500 volunteers who monitor the water quality of their local streams across Wisconsin. The program provides free training and equipment to volunteers who want to adopt and monitor the health of a local stream. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary – all are welcome.
