The Wautoma Lady Hornets softball team fell 8-3 to the visiting Waupaca Lady Comets in old East Central Conference play at Bird Creek Park on April 5.
Waupaca would take a 1-0 lead in the first as Hailey Bechard led the game off with a single and eventually scored on Macie Studzinski’s sacrifice fly.
The Lady Comets would have their big inning in the third on a couple of hits, HPB and a walk sprinkled in to go up 5-0.
Waupaca would stretch their lead with two more runs in the fifth on a few more walks and couple hits to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
Bechard again led off the sixth inning with a hit, scoring on a Studzinski sacrifice fly to make it 8-0. Wautoma’s bats livened up in the seventh with Liv Cieslik smoking a single right up the middle then stolen base, Larissa Piechowski reaching on an error scoring Cieslik, Eva Thompson slashing an RBI single and Kendall Gustke blasting a RBI double down the leftfield line to cut the deficit to 8-3. However, Waupaca’s pitcher Josie Peterson got the next three outs to end the game.
Waupaca would tally eight hits and five walks to Wautoma’s five hits with nobody getting a free pass. Cieslik (2x3, 2B, SB, run) and Thompson (2x3, RBI, run) led the Wautoma hitting department with Gustke (1x2, 2B, sac) adding the final Hornet hit.
Cieslik took the loss for the Hornets with Piechowski throwing a couple quality innings of relief. Brianna Buechner would have had at least a triple but the Comets leftfielder Kayla Keil made a great extended catch near the left field fence.
The Hornets fell to 3-2 overall for the season.
