ATTENTION TAXPAYERS-USPS HAS CHANGED IT’S PROCESS OF WHEN MAIL GETS POSTMARKED

Posted

Waushara County Treasurer Jessica Jaeger is encouraging taxpayers to be aware of a recent U.S. Postal Service policy change that will affect when envelopes are postmarked. The USPS has implemented a nationwide change as to when a postmark is affixed to the envelope, postmarks are now stamped when your envelope reaches the regional sorting center (Milwaukee) versus your local Post Office.
This means your postmark could be several days after you put your envelope in your mailbox or the drop box at the Post Office. Due to this delay in postmark, you must mail your tax payment to your Municipal Treasurer 3-5 days earlier. Don’t wait until the deadline to mail your payment.
When mailing your Real Estate Tax payment, the postmark is important as State laws define a timely payment based off of the USPS postmark, meaning payments may be considered delinquent if they are mailed too close the deadline even if the envelope was placed in a mailbox before the deadline.
Another option to ensure a timely postmark is to physically take your payment envelope into your local Post Office and request they hand stamp the postmark on your envelope.
The 2025 Real Estate Tax deadline for 1st Installment or Full payment is January 31, 2026. For those taxpayers that are wanting to have their taxes paid by the end of 2025 you should mail your payment(s) out immediately as your postmark (machine run or hand stamped) must be on or before 12/31/2025.
