Free tax preparation now available through CAP Services

Posted

CAP Services, Inc., in partnership with the IRS, is offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to help people file their taxes free of charge. Services are available to individuals and families with annual income below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Income limits are adjusted for household size. For example, a single person with an income of $31.300 or less would qualify.
CAP’s volunteers complete training and certification in tax law. These IRS-certified individuals provide free basic tax preparation and help taxpayers claim eligible tax credits such as the Child Tax Credit, Wisconsin Homestead Credit, and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
CAP offers tax preparation by appointment at multiple locations:
Stevens Point – Serving residents of Portage County, dial 211 to see if you qualify.
Waupaca – Serving residents of Waupaca County, dial 1-715-343-7100 to see if you qualify.

Wautoma – Serving residents of Waushara, Marquette, and Green Lake counties, dial 1-715-343-7100 to see if you qualify.
Electronic filing and direct deposit allow taxpayers to submit their returns and receive refunds much faster than paper filing. This year, the IRS has been mandated to promote direct deposit for refunds. As a result, taxpayers who choose to receive a paper check should expect an additional processing delay, with refunds taking six or more extra weeks to arrive.
Please go to CAP Services’ website at www.capservices.org/vita for income requirements and additional information.
CAP Services, Inc. is a private, nonprofit community action agency that has been advancing social and economic justice for people and communities in Outagamie, Portage, Waupaca, Marquette, and Waushara counties since 1966. More information is available at www.capservices.org.
