Hunters in Waushara County are being encouraged to donate venison through a program that helps provide food to neighbors facing hunger. The DNR Deer Donation Program, allows hunters to bring legally harvested deer to designated processors at no cost. Once processed, the venison is distributed to local food pantries.
Until recently, Waushara County hunters paid for the processing of any venison they wished to donate. This year, C & J Processing in Redgranite answered the call and became the only Deer Donation Program processor serving Waushara County.
To donate, hunters simply register, field dress and drop harvested deer off at C&J’s 24-hour cooler, located at 622 Warren St. Redgranite. Donated deer are then processed into one-pound packages of ground venison and provided to local food pantries. More than 1,000 pounds of venison from the bow deer season has already been delivered.
Tyler Weston, Executive Director of Waushara County Food Pantry – “We are grateful to C&J Processing for bringing this program to our county. The potential impact is significant. With the support of area hunters and our local processor, this program could provide 10,000 pounds of venison for our neighbors seeking food assistance! Let’s hunt to fight hunger! “
The program hopes to process more than 200 deer – those harvested recreationally and those harvested by Ag producers. Those hunting recreationally are encouraged to fill their tags and donate the extra deer they harvest. Ag producers hunting to reduce the deer population and crop damage on their farm are encouraged to fill all their Ag Tags and donate their extras to the program.
