Local Scout Troops host Outdoor Skills Day along Ice Age Trail

Posted

Members of Troop 650 from Wautoma and Troop 6650 from Neshkoro recently joined forces with the Wautoma Public Library, Waushara Public Health Department’s “Walk the Wash” initiative, and the Waushara Ice Age Alliance Chapter to host Outdoor Skills Day—a public outreach event held in celebration of National Ice Age Trails Day.
Scout Master Dave Giebel, Assistant Scoutmaster Greg Giebel, and Scoutmaster Jessi Gray led the troops, which included scouts Dillion, Kole, Joseph, Sam, Gabby, Gavin, Chase, and Charles. The event featured a series of interactive stations where scouts showcased essential camping skills. Attendees learned about setting up camp, Dutch oven cooking, safe axe handling, basic first aid, knot tying, and animal tracking. Diane Lueck delivered an engaging presentation on compass navigation and orienteering, while Lyle Buettner discussed the fundamentals of backpack camping along the Ice Age Trail. Carl Mesman provided insights into safe and effective chain saw use.
The scouts meet twice a month and are eagerly anticipating their upcoming summer camp, where they will also support three members on their journey to becoming Eagle Scouts. The troops welcome new members who have completed fifth grade or are at least 11 years old. For those interested in joining, Scout Master Dave Giebel can provide more information at 920-291-5801.
