Sharon Louise Hughes was born February 9, 1944. Sharon attended Zion Lutheran School and Columbus High School in Columbus, WI. She met Curt Hughes in high school and they married February 8, 1964. Their family grew with their children Delaine, Michael, and Sara.
In the early 1970’s the family moved to Florida, settling in Ocala. They joined St. John Lutheran Church, Ocala, FL where Sharon was active with the School Board and attending various school and sports events, supporting her children. She worked with Kirby vacuum before completing her college education, getting her nursing degree in 1980. Sharon loved the challenges of working in the operating room, until an unfortunate accident injured her back. She earned her bachelor's degree in Health Care Administration in 1988. Over the years, she worked as a facility inspector and director of nursing at various facilities.
Curt and Sharon moved to the Maggie Valley, North Carolina area where they lived for many years. There she was active in her church, enjoyed the beauty of the mountains, and spent time with her beloved dogs.
Later, they moved to Paris, KY to be closer to family. At 70, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which she beat. In 2018, they returned to Wisconsin. Sharon loved spending time outdoors - picking up sticks on the wooded property and watching the birds and deer at their home. She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing, reading, and doing puzzles. She loved her husband, Curt, and their life together. She was very proud of her three children, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Her faith in God was very important to her and helped her through the joys and struggles of life.
In May 2023, Sharon was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. She died March 2, 2025. She will be greatly missed. Her family is thankful that she is at peace with her Lord and Savior in Heaven.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Dorothy Kreger, her sister, Wanda, and half-brothers, Fred and Kenneth Salzwedel. She will be missed by her husband of 61 years, Curt; her children, Delaine (Jeff) Schiestel, Michael (Fiona) Hughes, and Sara Hughes; her grandchildren Matthew (Emma) Schiestel, Maria (Tom) O’Neil, Kristen Schiestel, Miranda (Alex) Wright, Anna Hughes, Caitlyn Bondank, Jacob Hughes, and Daniel Hughes; and great-grandchildren, Cohen, Kai, Maisy, and Wren; plus her sisters, nieces, and nephews and all manner of extended family and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Plover, WI. A time of visitation will occur from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be held at a later date at Hillside Cemetery in Columbus, WI In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, Plover, WI or the ThedaCare Hospice Foundation.
