Veronica T. Nielen passed away peacefully at home on November 13, 2024.
Born in Durand, Wisconsin, in 1934, she was the youngest of her siblings. She married her sweetheart, Robert Nielen, after he returned from the Korean war where they met at an apple orchard. They married and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they raised their family of five.
Veronica dedicated over 25 years to the Cudahy Police Department, where she earned the nickname "Ronny” (the card shark) and formed many lasting friendships.
Veronica was a devout Catholic and proud of her German heritage, except on St. Patrick’s Day when she was 100% Irish. She loved all German foods and dancing the polka with her family and friends. She was an avid traveler and enjoyed spending her winter sabbaticals in Florida, reading on the beach. Summers were special as she loved hosting the family at her cabin in central Wisconsin. Veronica was a hardworking, caring soul who treated everyone with respect and kindness. Her kitchen was always open, and no one ever left hungry. Her infectious smile will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Nielen; parents, John J. Bauer and Bertha (Poeschel) Bauer; and siblings, Emma Bauer, Ann Weissinger, Mary Schaefer, Barbara Dekan, William J. Bauer, and Hubert Bauer.
She is survived by her children, Robert J. Nielen, Donald (Jackie) Nielen, and Susan (Eric) Thomas; sister, Lucyann Sabelko; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services to be held at a later date at St. Josephs in Wautoma in the Spring of 2025.
