Wautoma wrestling coach pins down SCC Honors

Adam Vaughan named SCC Wrestling Coach of the Year

Posted

How long and what sports have you coached at Wautoma Area School District?
I’ve been coaching at Wautoma High School for ten years. When I first started in the district I was on staff all three seasons. I spent 7 years coaching Varsity Football, and 8 years coaching Varsity Softball in addition to my current ten years as a Varsity Wrestling Coach. Being part of the Hornet athletic community has been a great experience, and I’ve enjoyed helping build a positive culture while supporting our athletes as they grow both on and off the field.

What is your favorite part about coaching?
My favorite part of coaching is building relationships with the athletes and watching their growth over time. Seeing student-athletes develop confidence, work ethic, and leadership skills is incredibly rewarding. The wins are great, but knowing you played a role in helping young people grow as individuals is what makes coaching special.

How does it feel to be named SCC Coach of the Year?

It’s a humbling honor. Awards like this really reflect the effort of the entire program—our athletes, assistant coaches, and the support we get from the school and community. I’m proud of our team and grateful to be part of such a dedicated group.

How do you keep your team motivated or engaged?
We focus on creating a culture where effort, accountability, and teamwork are valued every day. Setting clear goals, celebrating small improvements, and making sure athletes understand their role on the team helps keep everyone stay motivated. Our goal is to have athletes feel valued and connected to the team, helping them naturally stay engaged.

What was a significant moment or turning point this past season that you feel defined your team?
A key moment for the team came when we were planning the lineup for the conference tournament. It was important to prioritize the team when creating the lineup in order to earn the most possible points. The athletes put the team ahead of themselves, which truly showed their commitment to one another.

Beyond the wins and losses, what are some successes of your athletes this season?
Beyond the scoreboard, I’m proud of the leadership our athletes showed, their commitment to improving every day, and the way they represented our school. Many of them stepped into bigger roles, supported their teammates, and showed great sportsmanship. Those qualities will stay with them long after the season ends.
