When those at the helm fail, we must step forward peacefully

Posted

Dear Reader,

In times like these—when our streets fill with protest, our communities fracture, and violence replaces dialogue

—we face an unsettling truth: those who claim to lead have abandoned their posts.

Not literally. Their offices are still occupied, their titles intact, their microphones hot. But the essence of leadership—moral courage, clarity of vision, and the will to do what’s right even at personal cost—has vanished.

Too many mistake volume for vision and cruelty for strength. They exploit pain for political theater, offer simple answers to complex problems, and lack the courage that the moment demands. The oppressed cry out, and those in power either avert their eyes or join the chorus of oppressors.

This is not leadership—it’s a hollow performance.

Yet the failure of the powerful does not absolve the rest of us. A leadership void does not stay empty because nature abhors a vacuum. When those above choose self-interest over service, it falls to us to lead.

We lead as teachers who make every student feel valued when politicians scapegoat the vulnerable. As neighbors who intervene instead of simply videoing injustice. As business owners who treat workers with dignity despite systems that reward exploitation. As parents who model integrity when public figures do not.

Leadership isn’t about office or title. It’s about the daily choice to favor courage over comfort, principle over convenience, justice over expedience. The oppressed need solidarity, not sympathy. The misguided need examples, not contempt. And the incompetent “leaders” need to be made irrelevant by our collective refusal to accept their failure as our fate.

Leadership is a choice renewed each day. When those at the helm fail—on any level—we become the leaders we need. The void is real. But it need not remain empty. Fill it. And when the time comes, vote—calmly, courageously, and for those committed to fairness and integrity.

Together, we can restore the soul of this country.
