The Almond-Bancroft Eagles played host to the Gresham Wildcats on Feb 24th for their final game of the regular season.
For the first 10 minutes of play the two teams seemed to be almost evenly matched as Ayden Phillips and Gresham Senior Wanbli Spotted War Bonnet went back and forth with basket after basket, keeping the score close and swapping the lead several times. The excitement of a close game was short lived however, as the Eagles seemed to wake up and button up their defense they quickly pulled ahead and took a 28 point lead by the end of the first half as Phillips continued his hot streak and riled up the crowd slamming home several dunks as the Wildcats team struggled to contain him.
The Second half looked very much the same as the first, with the Eagles, particularly Phillips, scoring almost at will. When the clock ran down its final seconds the Eagles led 95-50 and Ayden Phillips had set a new single game scoring record with 51 points. Phillips held the previous record with 46 points, a mark he had reached near the beginning of the season.
Phillips also pulled down 16 rebounds to finish the season with yet another double-double. Brody Dernbach aided the Eagles scoring efforts with a double-double of his own, bringing in 15 points and 14 assists. Karson Garner added 11 points off of the bench.
Catch the Eagles at home again this Friday, March 7 at 7 p.m. as they play in the regional semifinals to kick off their 2025 postseason run.
