Pioneer wrestlers represent Westfield at WIAA Tournament

Posted

Both the boys and girls wrestling teams from Westfield High School had representation in the WIAA Individual Wrestling Tournament. Arianna Weber, a sophomore, and Mason Groskreutz, a junior at Westfield, made a return to the state tournament in hopes of securing a spot as a place winner at the Kohl Center.
Weber came into the 185-pound bracket as the #4 seed and ended the tournament with a season 45-8 record and 6th place. She went 3-2 on the weekend, with two pins and a major decision win, with losses to the eventual 3rd place winner by major decision and an unfortunate medical forfeit in the 5th place match.
The phrase “third time’s a charm” rang true for Mason Groskreutz, who found himself on the podium in his third year of qualifying for the state tournament. As the #4 seed in the Division 3 144-pound boy’s bracket, Groskreutz went 4-1 on the weekend, battling back after a quarterfinals loss to Carter Birdyshaw of Weyauwega-Fremont, securing a 5th place finish. Mason also wrote his name in the Westfield HS history books, surpassing both the single-season wins record and single-season takedown record with 51 wins and 134 takedowns to cap off his junior season.
Weber and Groskreutz plan to both return to the wrestling mat next season as true leaders in the room and role models for future Pioneer Wrestlers.
