Gregg Davies, Margaret Bray, and Gordon Snell show off the new raised bed garden. They, along with many other residents at Heartland House, have tended to the new raised garden beds Josiah Grothe, CEO put in earlier this year. Heartland House residents planted 16 grape tomato plants in the spring, tended to the garden over the summer, and harvested an abundance of tomatoes in the past month. Just this week, they harvested four gallons of tomatoes, which were sent to the facility kitchen to prepare for salads, stews, soups, and more. Gardening like this helps to give people an opportunity to be given a purpose and contribute to meals, puts their bodies in action with weeding and picking, and gives an opportunity to be in fresh air and sun.
